From top left: the Birds; a magic sign that saw into the depth of our souls; totes a tote; Foxes' Den; Huey (we are not stalking you Huey, honest); much needed carrot cake (gluten free of course); relic of St. Patrick's day; being crafty; Somerset House interactive theatre, 'In the beginning was the end'.

Afternoon Tea

So, cake. Following on from the 'we are old' theme, we decided a little while ago to have a girls only tea party. Elegance was needed in our lives and what better way to achieve this than by inviting our amazing girlfriends over for an afternoon of sweet treats and gossip? Pretty dresses were optional, but encouraged.

Invite only!

This was also seen as a chance to use the Woods Ware Beryl pieces and vintage glassware that we have been collecting over the years. And eat sweets. And cake. Have we mentioned cake?

Always exciting when the Beryl is busted out

Neon glassware

Cocktail glasses (minus cocktails?!)

Now, we take this kind of gathering seriously. Preparations were made. We theme and colour co-ordinated the food. Gluten free cupcakes were baked well ahead of time and frozen. Recipe books were scoured for just the right sandwiches. Outfits were planned. Tea towels were ironed.

Preping for baking

Small selection of recipe books

Planning the presentation

Then we went to Sainsburys and bought a ton of sweets. Oops. The theme quickly changed from elegance to nostalgia. Ok, there was no real theme, just booze and sweet things.

Mini lollies!

The morning of the Tea saw the Birds in a slightly frazzled state, cleaning the flat whilst putting curlers in and trying to make sure the ciabatta didn't burn (failed on that). The following conversation took place:

"DUDE!"
"Dude?"
"We are having a Tea Party. Do we have any tea?"
"We have Prosecco"
"Open it"

Party rings - classic

By the time our first guests arrived we were ready, complete with tomato paste splattered dresses and bear feet slippers. Ok, so shortly after our first guests arrived we were ready. Processco was popped and (pink) glasses filled as we arranged the cakes and treats that Laura magically produced. These included: a coconut and raspberry cake; Nutella cupcakes; macarons and jellies. Wonderful home baked gluten free goodies were also provided by Eleanor, cream filled meringues and rose ice cream by Jess and brownies by Estelle. Not to mention all the bubbly booze and bloody Mary sandwiches.

Jelly Jelly Jelly

Inevitably, we spent the afternoon, evening and night eating, drinking and gossiping. We couldn't have been happier.

Drool

Ok, maybe pink remained as a theme

The next day we were still on a sugar high. This may have had something to do with the leftover brownies we had for breakfast (and cake a la mode for dinner). But whatever it was, it worked, and we spent the day dancing around the flat to Huey Morgan. This felt like a suitable conclusion to the weekend.

Recovery breakfast

Tin of leftovers

Some more leftovers

Lessons we learned that afternoon were: no matter how prepared we think we are, we will never be ready on time; girls will ALWAYS find something to gossip about; shoes maketh an outfit; everyone likes cake and everyone LOVES pink frosting.

Ooo, look

Unfortunately it was all too much for some.

New shit that came to light

The major theme this week has been work - not even WERK, like proper work. Sigh. Here is some of the shiz that occurred. From top left: Red redheads; the Freud museum; celebrating the end of Laura's Ofstead nightmare (yes, that is Laura working the background - having to work whilst celebrating, seriously); Lisa enjoying a 1D cupcake; almost midweek drinks; Red nose cakes; Raspberry.

Much love,

Feast

When our good friends Jess (Edesia London) and Ben invited us to the Feast food festival last week, I have to say our reactions were somewhat sceptical. A food festival usually comprises of creative ways to eat meat (in my mind at least), which meant that our combined vegetarian/wheat free diets might be treated with suspicion. To add to this, Feast is held in Tobacco Dock, i.e. outside. Have you been outside lately?! No, you have not, because it is SO freaking COLD. Of course, on my way to meet everyone I realised I had left my gloves, scarf and proper camera at work. Great.

Could the promise be delivered?

For all the negativity, we were looking forward to a drink, oh, I mean, having a drink with some good friends that we don't get to see often enough (did I save that?) Upon meeting at Shadwell station, Laura and I immediately clocked the throngs of middle class couples and groups heading down the street. Not even bothering to check googlemaps, we followed them to Tabacco Dock.

A wise choice of venue for March?

The first person we encountered was a VERY happy security guard, busting some little moves...good start Feast, we thought, good start.

On to the bar. On the way we found Jess and Ben, and used our full lung capacities taking in all the delicious  aromas...this, we thought, might not be so bad.

Bring on the food

Drinks in hands and bums on seats we formed a plan to take turns in foraging. We did quite well. A steady stream of wonderful food followed, and the cold was (almost) forgotten.

No, really - food please

As well as good food, Feast provided live music, which very nearly resulted in some moves being busted by Jess and Laura, nearly (next time?) and did provide the backdrop for some serious spectacles envy.

Aiding in the seeing of what I was eating

Here is a list of what we ate and drank. I wonder if you can guess who ate what?

Corn bread with guacamole and some amazing spicy substance; ribs (were they lamb or pork?); posh fish and chips, complete with actual, real curry sauce; fondue sandwich, yes you read  that correctly; pizza; rabbit; chocolate, coconut and pistachio flavoured cream filled meringues topped with chocolate, caramel, nuts, ginger and rhubarb; macarons; red wine; gin; ale.

I think they were good

Just out of shot: Laura passed
out with happiness

As Laura and I bade found farewells to Jess and Ben (with promises of rose ice cream from Jess) and made our way through south London back to Bird on a Wire towers we reflected that food is good. Good food is good; great food with great friends (and wine) is better.

Happy Feasters

The next day we found out we missed out on glow in the dark ping pong. Gutted.

How did we miss this?!

Much love,
